Climate change has been the Region of Peel Councils priority for over ten years, the current term of Council priority is ‘Build Environmental Resiliency’ and is a key part of the Regions Strategic Plan. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission reduction is an essential part of the Regional Climate Change Master Plan where buildings are identified as one the largest emitters of GHG.
The Queen Frederica senior’s apartment building is located at 3020 Queen Frederica Drive in Mississauga. It is a 6-storey apartment building built in 1971 and comprises 114 apartments, all of which are 1 bedroom. The building has no basement and is built on grade. The building had undergone several renovations, including a window replacement in 1994 and a roof-rebuild in 2006.
CES was responsible for managing a multi-disciplinary team through phases 1 to 5, covering Investigation and Pre-Design, Design Development, Construction Contract Documentation, Procurement, Construction Administration, and Warranty/Closeout. The main objective was to electrify all gas-fired mechanical equipment to achieve GHG reduction and energy
efficiency. To support this objective, CES Engineering developed and proposed retrofit measures using full lifecycle costing and dynamic energy modeling. These models, calibrated to each building’s baseline energy data, were organized into Design Solutions (0-4), each aimed at specific targets like GHG reduction and CaGBC ZCB Certification, along with incremental costings to aid Peel Living in the selection process.
The final selection process balanced innovative solutions with practical, cost-effective measures. CES ensured that the designs met GHG reduction targets while remaining financially feasible by considering lifecycle costs and long-term benefits. This approach led to a forward-thinking, yet budget-conscious scope of work outlined below.
