Integrated Life Safety

Life safety systems are essential to protecting people and property during emergencies; however, the design and operation of these critical systems and their integration with other building features and systems can be highly complex.

Integrations (interconnections) between Fire Alarm, Fire Protection, Mechanical Equipment, Emergency Generators, and a variety of other systems are a key part of the overall Life Safety systems design in a facility. These systems are designed to operate together, and when they do not, the life safety of building occupants can be compromised . Unfortunately, tragedies have occurred in Canada in which loss of life has been attributed to non-functioning life safety integrations.

To address this challenge, the CAN/ULC-S1001 Standard for Integrated Systems Testing of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems was developed to prescribe a methodology for verifying and documenting that all interconnections between systems provided for fire protection and life safety functions are installed and operating in conformance with their design criteria. Integrated testing of fire protection and life safety systems in line with the CAN/ULC-S1001 Standard has been referenced in the National Building Code of Canada since 2015 and has now been adopted as a requirement by many provincial and municipal Building Codes across Canada.

As well-established consulting engineering firm with deep roots in commissioning of complex and mission critical facilities, CES Group has a long history of providing integrated testing services and have leveraged this experience to become experts in application of the CAN/ULC-S1001 Standard and becoming a UL Listed Integrated Testing Service Provider firm. As of April 30th, 2024 CES became the first and only UL Listed firm in Western Canada .

The Underwriters Laboratory of Canada (ULC) Integrated Systems Testing Program is intended to assist AHJs and building owners in confirming that organizations and individuals designated as Integrated Systems Testing Service Providers have the technical knowledge, practical skills and expertise to conduct the testing process, requirements and documentation as required by the standard CAN/ULC-S1001. This designation recognizes the team at CES Group as experts in this complex and challenging area of practice.  As a UL Listed Integrated Systems Testing Service Provider that has been assessed and qualified under this ULC program, CES is permitted to issue ULC Certificates of Compliance verifying that the integrated fire protection and life safety systems in a building have been successfully tested in accordance with CAN/ULC-S1001.
